De or het? The quick answer

Dutch has two words for the: de and het. About two out of three nouns take de, every plural takes de, and every diminutive (-je) takes het. For the rest, a few patterns help, and the words without a pattern you learn with their article.

Een (a/an) is the same for both: een tafel, een huis.
