A1 → A2 WORKBOOK LESSON 8 / 17
The Future in Dutch: Gaan, Zullen and the Present Tense
Your plans, your promises and your diary, in everyday Dutch.
The essentials
Dutch has three ways to talk about the future, and the most common is the simplest: the present tense with a time word. Morgen werk ik thuis (Tomorrow I am working from home).
Core rule: for everyday plans use the present or gaan + infinitive. Keep zullen for promises, offers (Zal ik…?) and suggestions (Zullen we…?). Dutch zullen is not an everyday "will".
| Way | Used for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| present + time word | fixed plans, arrangements | Morgen werk ik thuis. |
| gaan + infinitive | plans, intentions, what is about to happen | Ik ga vanavond koken. |
| gaan + infinitive | Het gaat regenen. | |
| zullen + infinitive | a promise | Ik zal je morgen bellen. |
| Zal ik…? | an offer | Zal ik de deur dichtdoen? |
| Zullen we…? | a suggestion | Zullen we morgen afspreken? |
Gaan + Infinitive
Gaan works like a modal verb: it takes the usual verb position, and the second verb goes to the end as an infinitive. A separable verb stays whole there.
| Subject | gaan | Example |
|---|---|---|
| ik | ga | Ik ga morgen vroeg opstaan. |
| jij | gaat (ga je) | Ga je vanavond koken? |
| hij / zij | gaat | Zij gaat haar moeder opbellen. |
| wij | gaan | Wij gaan volgend jaar verhuizen. |
| jullie | gaan | Wat gaan jullie dit weekend doen? |
| zij (they) | gaan | Ze gaan in juni trouwen. |
Zullen: Promises, Offers and Suggestions
Zullen is conjugated like this: ik zal, jij zult / zal, u zult / zal, hij zal, wij zullen, jullie zullen, zij zullen. Both jij zult and jij zal are correct; zal is more common in speech.
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| Promise | Ik zal het niet vergeten. |
| Promise | We zullen je helpen. |
| Offer | Zal ik je helpen? |
| Offer | Zal ik koffie maken? |
| Suggestion | Zullen we een film kijken? |
| Suggestion | Zullen we om acht uur afspreken? |
Time Words for the Future
These words do most of the work. Put one first and remember the inversion: Volgende week ga ik naar Spanje.
| Dutch | English |
|---|---|
| straks | later, in a while |
| zo meteen | in a moment |
| vanavond | this evening, tonight |
| morgen | tomorrow |
| overmorgen | the day after tomorrow |
| volgende week | next week |
| volgend jaar | next year |
| over twee weken | in two weeks |
| binnenkort | soon |
My diary: a week of plans, mostly in the present tense.
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| maandag | Maandag ga ik naar de tandarts. |
| dinsdag | Dinsdag werk ik thuis. |
| woensdag | Woensdag ga ik met Anna lunchen. |
| vrijdag | Vrijdag spreek ik met vrienden af. |
| zaterdag | Zaterdag ga ik lekker uitslapen. |
Mistakes English Speakers Make
English "will" is everywhere, and Dutch has a word that looks just like it: wil. These are the slips to watch.
✗ Het wil morgen regenen.
✓ Het gaat morgen regenen.
Willen means "to want", not "will". Use gaan for what is going to happen.
✗ Ik ga kook vanavond.
✓ Ik ga vanavond koken.
After gaan, the second verb is an infinitive, at the end.
✗ Zal ik helpen jou?
✓ Zal ik je helpen?
The object comes before the infinitive at the end.
✗ Morgen ik werk thuis.
✓ Morgen werk ik thuis.
A time word first sends the verb to second place.
