Dutch Prepositions of Place and Time: In, Op, Aan, Bij, Om

Where things are, and when things happen. Book a date like a local.

The essentials

Four little words cover most places: in (inside), op (on a surface, and some places), aan (attached to, at the edge of) and bij (at someone's place, near, at a business). For time, three: om, op and in.

Core rule for time: om + a clock time, op + a day or date, in + a month, season or year. Om acht uur, op maandag, op 5 mei, in mei, in de zomer, in 2026.

WordPlaceExample
in inside; a town or countryDe melk staat in de koelkast. TranslateDe melk staat in de koelkast. - The milk is in the fridge.

bij at someone's; near; at a shopIk ben bij mijn moeder. TranslateIk ben bij mijn moeder. - I am at my mother's.

Where Things Are

Some places simply take op in Dutch where English says "at" or "in": op school, op kantoor, op het station, op straat, op de markt, and a floor, op de derde verdieping. Learn them as fixed pairs.

WordExampleUse
