Polite Requests in Dutch: Zou, Graag and Liever

Phone the doctor, make an appointment, say what suits you. Politely.

The essentials

Zou (plural zouden) is the polite key of Dutch. Put it where the verb goes and send the other verbs to the end: Zou u dat kunnen herhalen? (Could you repeat that?) It softens a request the way "could" and "would" do in English.

Core rule: ik, jij, u, hij, zij → zou; wij, jullie, zij → zouden. The infinitive (or two) goes last.

UseExample
A polite questionZou u dat kunnen herhalen? TranslateZou u dat kunnen herhalen? - Could you repeat that?
A polite questionZou ik een afspraak kunnen maken? TranslateZou ik een afspraak kunnen maken? - Could I make an appointment?
A wishIk zou graag een afspraak willen maken. TranslateIk zou graag een afspraak willen maken. - I would like to make an appointment.
PluralZouden jullie iets zachter kunnen praten? TranslateZouden jullie iets zachter kunnen praten? - Could you talk a bit more quietly?
An offerIk zou u graag helpen. TranslateIk zou u graag helpen. - I would be glad to help you.
💡 Two infinitives at the end: kunnen maken, willen maken. The modal comes first, then the main verb: Ik zou graag een afspraak willen maken.

Graag, Liever, Het Liefst

To say what you like doing and what suits you, Dutch uses graag (gladly), liever (rather) and het liefst (most of all). You met them in the A1 comparison lesson; here they help you choose a time.

WordMeaningExample
graag like to, gladlyIk drink graag thee. TranslateIk drink graag thee. - I like drinking tea.
liever prefer, ratherIk drink liever koffie. TranslateIk drink liever koffie. - I prefer coffee.
het liefst like bestIk drink het liefst water. TranslateIk drink het liefst water. - Most of all I like water.
liever choosing a timeIk kom liever 's ochtends. TranslateIk kom liever 's ochtends. - I would rather come in the morning.
het liefst choosing a dayHet liefst op dinsdag. TranslateHet liefst op dinsdag. - Preferably on Tuesday.
💡 Graag also makes any request polite on its own: Een koffie, graag. Ik wil graag betalen.

Times Around the Half Hour

Dutch counts towards the next hour: half drie is 2:30, "half to three". The five minutes either side of the half hour are said from the half: vijf voor half drie (2:25), vijf over half drie (2:35).

ClockDutchClockDutch
2:05vijf over twee 2:35vijf over half drie
2:10tien over twee 2:40tien over half drie
2:15kwart over twee 2:45kwart voor drie
2:20tien voor half drie 2:50tien voor drie
2:25vijf voor half drie 2:55vijf voor drie
2:30half drie 3:00drie uur
💡 On the phone, people often confirm with the 24-hour clock: om veertien uur dertig (at 14:30). If you are unsure, repeat it back: Dus om half drie?

Phoning the Doctor

A call to the GP's assistant (de assistente) uses everything in this lesson. Listen to the whole call:

WhoDutch
AssistantGoedemorgen, met de praktijk van dokter Visser. TranslateGoedemorgen, met de praktijk van dokter Visser. - Good morning, Dr Visser's practice.
YouGoedemorgen, u spreekt met Maria Lopez. Ik zou graag een afspraak willen maken. TranslateGoedemorgen, u spreekt met Maria Lopez. Ik zou graag een afspraak willen maken. - Good morning, this is Maria Lopez. I would like to make an appointment.
AssistantWat zijn uw klachten? TranslateWat zijn uw klachten? - What are your symptoms?
YouIk heb al drie dagen keelpijn. TranslateIk heb al drie dagen keelpijn. - I have had a sore throat for three days.
AssistantKunt u vanmiddag om vijf voor half drie komen? TranslateKunt u vanmiddag om vijf voor half drie komen? - Can you come this afternoon at 2:25?
YouDat komt niet zo goed uit. Zou het ook later kunnen? TranslateDat komt niet zo goed uit. Zou het ook later kunnen? - That is not very convenient. Could it be later?
AssistantJa, om tien over half vier. TranslateJa, om tien over half vier. - Yes, at 3:40.
YouDat is prima. Dank u wel. TranslateDat is prima. Dank u wel. - That is fine. Thank you.
Real-life note: Dat komt (niet) goed uit means "that is (not) convenient". It is the polite way to say yes or no to a time.
COMMON MISTAKES

Mistakes English Speakers Make

English "would" and "could" work much like zou, but Dutch counts time differently and has its own comparative of graag.

✗ Zou u kunnen herhalen dat? ✓ Zou u dat kunnen herhalen?

The object comes before the infinitives at the end.

✗ half drie = 3:30 ✓ half drie = 2:30

Half counts towards the next hour.

✗ Ik drink meer graag koffie. ✓ Ik drink liever koffie.

Graag has its own forms: liever, het liefst.

✗ Wij zou graag komen. ✓ Wij zouden graag komen.

Plural subjects take zouden.
