A1 → A2 WORKBOOK LESSON 6 / 17
The Dutch Simple Past (Imperfectum): Regular and Irregular Verbs
One word for the past, and the tense of every good story.
The essentials
The simple past (het imperfectum) is one word: ik werkte (I worked), ik ging (I went). Dutch uses it to tell a story and to describe how things were. Lesson 7 shows when to choose it over the perfect.
Core rule for regular verbs: stem + -te if the stem ends in one of the 't kofschip consonants (t, k, f, s, ch, p), otherwise stem + -de. There is one singular form and one plural form, which adds -n.
| 't kofschip? | Singular | Plural | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| yes: werken → werk | werkte | werkten | Ik werkte tot zes uur. |
| no: wonen → woon | woonde | woonden | Wij woonden in Utrecht. |
Regular Verbs
Singular (ik, jij, u, hij, zij, het) all share one form. Plural (wij, jullie, zij) adds -n. The stem keeps all its letters, so a stem ending in t gives -tte: wachtte.
| Infinitive | Stem | Past (ik, hij) | Past (wij, zij) |
|---|---|---|---|
| werken | werk | werkte | werkten |
| maken | maak | maakte | maakten |
| fietsen | fiets | fietste | fietsten |
| stoppen | stop | stopte | stopten |
| wachten | wacht | wachtte | wachtten |
| praten | praat | praatte | praatten |
| wonen | woon | woonde | woonden |
| spelen | speel | speelde | speelden |
| leren | leer | leerde | leerden |
| bellen | bel | belde | belden |
| horen | hoor | hoorde | hoorden |
The Irregular Verbs You Need Most
The most frequent verbs change their vowel instead of adding -te or -de. There is no rule to find them; there is good news: the plural is almost always the singular + -en.
| Infinitive | Past (ik, hij) | Past (wij, zij) | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| zijn | was | waren | Ik was gisteren ziek. |
| hebben | had | hadden | Wij hadden geen tijd. |
| gaan | ging | gingen | Hij ging naar huis. |
| komen | kwam | kwamen | De bus kwam te laat. |
| doen | deed | deden | Wat deed je daar? |
| zien | zag | zagen | Ik zag mijn buurman. |
| eten | at | aten | We aten pannenkoeken. |
| drinken | dronk | dronken | Zij dronk thee. |
| nemen | nam | namen | Ik nam de trein. |
| geven | gaf | gaven | Hij gaf me een boek. |
| zeggen | zei | zeiden | Ze zei niets. |
| vragen | vroeg | vroegen | Hij vroeg de weg. |
| kopen | kocht | kochten | Ik kocht brood. |
| denken | dacht | dachten | Ik dacht aan jou. |
| lezen | las | lazen | Ik las de krant. |
| schrijven | schreef | schreven | Zij schreef een brief. |
| blijven | bleef | bleven | We bleven thuis. |
| kijken | keek | keken | Ze keken tv. |
| lopen | liep | liepen | Hij liep naar de bushalte. |
| zitten | zat | zaten | We zaten in de trein. |
| weten | wist | wisten | Ik wist het niet. |
| krijgen | kreeg | kregen | Ik kreeg een cadeau. |
| worden | werd | werden | Het werd koud. |
The modal verbs are irregular too, and you will use them constantly in the past:
| Infinitive | Past (ik, hij) | Past (wij, zij) | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| kunnen | kon | konden | Ik kon niet komen. |
| moeten | moest | moesten | Ik moest werken. |
| willen | wilde | wilden | Hij wilde naar huis. |
| mogen | mocht | mochten | We mochten niet roken. |
Telling a Story
Here is a short story in the simple past. Notice the separable verb: the prefix still goes to the end, Ik stond om zeven uur op.
Mistakes English Speakers Make
English adds -ed to almost everything, so the choice between -te and -de, and the plural -n, are easy to forget.
✗ Ik werkde.
✓ Ik werkte.
The stem ends in k, a 't kofschip consonant: -te.
✗ Wij werkte.
✓ Wij werkten.
Plural subjects add -n.
✗ Ik gaade naar huis.
✓ Ik ging naar huis.
Gaan is irregular: ging.
✗ Ik wachte.
✓ Ik wachtte.
Keep the stem's t, then add -te: wacht + te.
✗ Hij leevde in Utrecht.
✓ Hij leefde in Utrecht.
The stem is written leef; the v of leven decides the ending: -de.
